The Pentaho BI Platform version 1.6 Milestone 4 (M4) is anticipated to be ready on June 8th and the release candidate (RC1) is expected by the end of June.
A massive testing effort will be starting immediately after M4. We are currently working on the test plan and platform matrix and are asking for community members interested in the success of 1.6 to participate. We want to test on as many different platforms, operating systems and database combinations as we can. We also want to make sure that we have included your use-cases in the testing plan. In order to coordinate test cases and maximize your time, please email me at CommunityConnection@pentaho.org with your platform, use-cases and willingness to help test.
Some of the 1.6 highlights are:
- Web-based Ad Hoc Query and Reporting - easy to use, self-service reporting for the masses
- Pentaho Metadata - enabling self-service reporting by shielding business users from the complexities of underlying data sources and dramatically reduces maintenance costs associated with maintaining your BI deployments
- Security - pluggable security model with the ability to integrate with existing security infrastructures like LDAP and MSAD
- Subscriptions - the ability for end users to schedule and configure the delivery of Pentaho content
- RDBMS repository - the ability to house the Pentaho Solutions Repository in an RDBMS
- Mondrian Schema and Data cache flushing - ability to flush the Mondrian caches without restarting the server
As we get close to M4, I will send out more information with links to a 1.6 testing forum and the test plan. This is a great opportunity to try out the new features and make sure that 1.6 will meet your needs!
Thanks for making the Pentaho open source project successful,
Doug "Spanky" Moran

Requirements gathering has begun for the Pentaho Dashboard Designer and we are looking for community members interested in participating or providing feedback for this project.
The goal is to deliver a rich, thin client interface for designing Pentaho Dashboards. This interface will provide users with the ability to create rich, interactive dashboards by combining Pentaho charts, reports, common POV controls and external content.
You can get all the information about the dashboard designer project including status, requirements, architecture and information about how to participate by going to the Dashboard Designer Home Page.
You can participate in this project by going to the Dashboard Designer forum at http://forums.pentaho.org

Pentaho metadata editor 1.5.3 M3 released
Pentaho metadata allows administrators to define reusable, metadata models on top of complex, underlying RDBMS and source systems. These
'Business Views' shield users from the complexities of underlying databases like tables, PK/FK relationships, and SQL. The metadata editor is used to create the models used by the web based query and reporting functionality in the 1.5 Pentaho Server.

Cedric Pronzato (Mimil)
Pentaho Contributer
What company do you work for and what do you do?.
I am working for one of the main European Telco operators named Orange (aka France Telecom).
I am currently working as a Java developer in portals and e-commerce activities.
Tell us a little about your engineering career to date.
I just finished my studies in September. I started working for Orange about 4 years ago when I started my IT studies (stages, ...) and I am now a full time engineer in one of their Research and Development centers in France.
When did you first become interested in open source?
I would say 4 years ago, for a school project. I decided to build software for managing cybercafés in Java (a language I just started to learn) and I was in need of reporting and charting libraries. That's how I get dragged into the Open Source project named JFreeReport.
What projects do you work on at Pentaho?
I am working with Thomas Morgner the Pentaho Reporting Architect and author of JFreeReport. So here is the full circle: me -> JFreeReport -> Thomas -> Pentaho Reporting -> Pentaho -> me
Do you work with any projects other than Pentaho?
On which I am active? Not that much, because I use the common physics, I cannot slowdown time and handle any other Open Source project contributions. I just hope that I will eventually be able to work on the ones I would like (TestNG, ...) as future projects for work.
What do you do in your spare time?
As said before some Open Source but I could add motorbike (as soon as I buy one). Oh yes, I also planned to conquer the world (not war!). I am thinking of some ideas around renewable energy - so if someone is not too afraid to loose a bunch of money with me... =) (well, at least I tried)
